Welcome to Open Creek Dam Campground!

Another camping season has come and gone. Thank you to all the wonderful campers and visitors that made it out for this past season. It was unfortunately a slower season due to the weather and not being able to stock fish this past year, but we very much look forward to what next season has to offer.

We would like to extend a big thank you to our wonderful care takers who work day in and day out to maintain the campground and along with our wonderful group of Rimbey Fish & Game volunteers.

Fishing, Whirling Disease and Open Creek Dam

*New Information Released November 6,2019*

It was announced at our November meeting that we have confirmation that Open Creek Dam has NOT been infected with Whirling Disease.

We are extremely thrilled to have received the test results back and look forward to stocking for the 2020 season!

Background Information: Unfortunately Open Creek Reservoir had appeared to been infected with Whirling disease three years ago when we received our annual supply of rainbow trout for stocking. This happened to a number of ponds in Alberta, the supplier brought in infected trout.Their trout were distributed to several hundred locations and as a result of this, the Alberta Government had set up a Whirling disease committee to figure out what should be done. Their plan involves many aspects and to see their full plan, you can visit https://www.alberta.ca/whirling-disease.aspx. This site includes a fair bit of information and links to other sites such as a map of where the disease has been found in Alberta. A very good Youtube video with more information is also available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-1UFcQu20Y.

There are no trout left in the pond due to the complete winter kill of 2017/18 and no stocking permitted in 2019. There may be a few suckers and perch but definitely no trout in the pond. They initiated a project to work with the Rimbey Fish and Game where they placed approximately 500 small trout in cages in several locations around the lake. These fish were examined after being removed in August by the Provincial biologists in which we now have received the test results back.

We thank you for your patience well we worked through this, and hope that you still enjoyed a beautiful summer at Open Creek Campground.
